RHS grad earns league honors

Kyle Carroll, a 2012 graduate of Richmond High School, was named the Big Rock Big Performer of the Week for June 16-22. Carroll is a shortstop for the Morehead City, N.C., Marlins of the Coastal Plain League.

For the week, the former Spartan went 11-for-17 at the plate, earning a .647 batting average, as well as a .716 on-base percentage in 28 plate appearances. He also scored seven runs, including a home run, knocked in four runs, and drew 10 walks.

At Wilson, Carroll hit in the seven hole and went 2-for-4, scoring one run, earning a walk, and snagging his first stolen base of the season. Against Wilmington at home, Carroll got two hits in three at-bats and scored two runs.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Marlins scored a season-high seven runs in one inning, with Carroll contributing a run scoring single. He also swiped second and drew two walks in the 12-9 win against the Sharks.

At Wilmington the following day, Carroll turned it up a notch, going 4-for-4 with a double, scoring one run, knocking in a run and drawing a walk. At shortstop, he got two putouts and two assists on the evening. In three plate appearances against Wilson at home on Saturday, he was 0-for-1, but reached base on balls twice, while also swiping second.
