After getting handcuffed by Carrollton’s Luke Wozny Thursday afternoon, the Spartan batters bounced back the next night at Lawson, but still dropped a 7-5 contest to the Cardinals.
Richmond fell to 2-4 in the MRVC East with a 2-1 9-inning loss at Carrollton. Wozny and Richmond’s Shane Battagler hooked up in a pitcher’s duel on a cold afternoon. The Trojans turned a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth inning into the winning run to back Wozny’s complete-game effort. The Carrollton junior struck out 16 Spartans. The lone Richmond hit came in the seventh on Kaleb Heber’s single up the middle to score Quinton Maxwell to tie the contest at 1-1. Maxwell opened the inning by drawing the only walk Wozny allowed. He advanced to second on Jake Gray’s sacrifice bunt and then scored on Heber’s hit.
Ridge Mathis scored the first run of the game in the home half of the second after he reached on a leadoff single. He came home one-out later on Ty Hudson’s single. Dakota Sweeney began Carrollton’s ninth inning with a leadoff walk. Tanner Sarbaugh reached one out later on a base hit and after an intentional walk, Sweeney scored when he beat the throw to the plate on an infield single by Gage Boggs.
