The Richmond Lady Spartans opened Tuesday’s MRVC East track meet at Higginsville with a victory in the 4 x 800 relay, and capped the day with another victory in the 4 x 400 relay. In between those events, the Lady Spartans added a few more firsts, a few seconds and thirds and came back to Richmond with their first conference track title since 1977.

Richmond ended the six-year run of Higginsville by piling up 171 points, with the Lady Huskers a distant second after totaling 136. Knob Noster grabbed third with 90, followed by Carrollton (56.5), Holden (51) and Lexington (49.5).

Three relay teams crossed the line ahead of the pack for Richmond. The 4 x 800 team of Mary Beth Bailey, Savannah Hamilton, Kameron Carmichael and Jocelyn Caldwell turned in a time of 10 minutes, 42.65 seconds to get things started.

The 4 x 400 of Madison Cole, Mallory Cole, Hamilton and Elizabeth Windsor finished in 4:21.88, which was 3 seconds ahead of Higginsville while the 4 x 200 squad of Madison Cole, Mallory Cole, Kerrigan Maddox and Sherri Doss also edged Higginsville with a time of 1:54.93.

Higginsville had the upper hand in the 4 x 100 with the winning time of 53.4, while Doss, Randi Huffman, Nicole Johnson and Kerrigan Maddox placed second with a time of 55.06.

Once again, Bailey dominated the distance races by winning the 1,600 and 3,200. The RHS senior ran the 1,600 in 5:43.82, and the 3,200 in 12:49.88.
