Lady Spartans advance five individuals to sectional meet

Led by freshman Sherri Doss and senior Mary Beth Bailey, the Richmond Lady Spartans earned 54.5 points Saturday at the Class 3, District 8 track meet held at Jerry Litton Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe. Richmond had its highest district finish in a number of years, as the Lady Spartans took fifth in the 15-team field. The host Lady Hornets captured the district crown with 127 points, with Liberty North finishing as the runner-up with 93 points.

Lawson was third with 66 points, followed by Excelsior Springs with 56.5.

Richmond will have five individuals and a relay team in Saturday’s sectional meet in Excelsior Springs.

Doss had a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.19 seconds, in addition to a fourth-place showing in the 100-meter dash as she crossed the line in 13.42. Doss had turned in a time of 13.24 in the preliminaries for seventh overall entering the finals. Nikki Smith of Lawson had the winning time in the 200 with 26.43, while Case Morgan of Savannah won the 100-meter dash with 13.10.

Bailey continued to run well in the distance races and advanced to the sectional in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters.
