Spartans bounce back to end skid at seven games

By Russ Green-Sports Editor

After Oak Grove stretched the Richmond Spartan losing streak to seven games one night earlier, the Richmond Spartans regained their winning formula Tuesday afternoon at Knob Noster. For the second time this season, Richmond senior Shane Battagler held the Panthers without a run as the Spartans grabbed a 3-0 MRVC East road win.

Richmond improves to 2-3 in league play, and 3-12 overall.

Knob Noster drops to 1-5 in conference and 3-10 overall after managing just 6 singles against Battagler. Battagler walked one and struck out 5.

Jordan Beck had 2 of Richmond’s 8 hits. The Spartan catcher opened the second inning with a single and his courtesy runner, Riley Maulsby scored when Garrett Hewlett reached on a two-out Panther error. Tim Beasley drew a one-out walk in the fourth inning – his second free pass of the game – and later scored Richmond’s second run.

Kody Reed’s one-out single in the fifth led to the Spartans’ final run of the game. Quinton Maxwell followed with a walk and Jake Gray’s base hit up the middle chased Reed home for a 3-0 RHS advantage.

Oak Grove wasted no time in putting away the Spartans Monday afternoon at Southview Park. The Panthers chalked up their 13th victory in 16 outings with a 20-3 win over the Spartans. Oak Grove sent 18 batters to the plate in a 13-run first inning to take command of the afternoon.
