The Lady Spartan 4 x 800 relay team set the tone as they began Tuesday’s Hoot Middleton Invitational by setting a new meet record. It was one of two meet records set by the Richmond girls as they finished second in the 12-team field on a cool and windy afternoon at Spartan Stadium.
The Lady Spartans ended the day with 127.5 points, with Lawson winning its second consecutive Middleton title after earning 140 points. Grain Valley placed third with 91.
In the opening event of the day, the 4 x 800 squad of Savannah Hamilton, Mary Beth Bailey, Jocelyn Caldwell and Elizabeth Windsor combined for a time of 10 minutes, 24 seconds to set a new meet standard. The old mark of 10:36.9 was set in 2008 by Lawson’s Amanda Mavel, Dawn Weir, Janna Kujawa and Brittney McNelly.
This year’s Lawson team finished one second behind the Lady Spartans, while Grain Valley was a distant third.
Just a few days after setting a new school mark in the 3,200 meters, Bailey took an eraser to the Middleton record book again on Tuesday in the same event. The Lady Spartan senior, who set the new RHS mark of 12:06.34 at the Joe Shy Relays in Chillicothe on Friday afternoon, won Tuesday’s event with a time of 12:29.38. That performance broke the mark of 12:37 set 10 years ago by Holden’s Sandy Davidson.
