The Richmond Spartans put together an 8-12 record Wednesday to finish fifth at the Excelsior Springs Invitational tennis tournament. The Spartans had two doubles teams place fourth, to go along with a fourth-place showing in singles competition.
Platte County won 16 of 20 matches to take first place in the team standings, with the host Tigers also going 16-4, but taking second on the tiebreaker. Kearney was third with 14-6 and Winnetonka placed fourth in the eight-team field with a 12-8 showing.
Belton finished behind Richmond with a 6-14 record, followed by Odessa and Carrollton both going 4-16 for the day, with the Bulldogs taking seventh on the tiebreaker.
Collin Williamson put together a 2-1 record in pool play and went on to place fourth in No. 2 singles. He won his first two matches, 6-1 over Luke Jenkins of Carrollton and 6-0 over Evan Dickmeier of Odessa. Williamson lost his final pool match to Austin Hale of Platte County, 4-6, and then fell in the third-place match to Collin Monsees of Winnetonka by the same score.
Ryan Sander and Wyatt Bullk took fourth in No. 2 doubles. The opened with a 6-0 win over Michael Greer/Sheldon Steward of Carrollton. The pair then took a 7-6 decision with a 7-2 win in the tiebreaker of Corbin Kloeppel/Tyler Wagner of Odessa, but was shutout in the pool final, 0-6, by Matt Licop/David Wilson of Platte County. The Spartan duo was blanked in the third-place match by Kirby Barnhart/Jake Cole of Kearney.
