The young Spartan baseball team continues to experience some growing pains early in the 2014 season. After dropping their opener at Chillicothe, the Spartans lost all three games at Saturday’s Odessa Tournament by double digits.
Richmond fell in the opening game to MRVC East favorite Holden, 16-0. Eagles’ hurler Coby Seiz shut down the Spartan bats. A first-inning single by Quinton Maxwell and a fourth-inning walk by Jake Gray were the only Richmond batters to reach. Seiz fanned eight Spartans in his complete-game, 5-inning stint.
Meanwhile the Holden bats erupted for 13 hits – nine singles and four doubles. Austin Tevis collected a pair of two-baggers for the Eagles with Lane Noel reaching twice on singles and also drawing a walk.
Richmond fell to the tournament hosts 12-2 in the second contest of the day. The Spartans drew three walks in the second inning to get their first run of the game. Haiden Kilpatrick’s leadoff single in the third led to Richmond’s other run. Kaleb Heber’s two-out base hit chased Kilpatrick home. Shane Battagler reached three times for Richmond when he drew a walk, was hit by a pitch and reached on an error. Kody Reed walked twice for the Spartans.
