Both the Spartans and Lady Spartans finished as runner-up in the MRVC East track championships last spring, and both Richmond squads look to be in the hunt again this year.
Spartan coach Dennis Harper and Lady Spartan coach Mike Long have plenty of returning experience to lean on as the new season approaches.
The quest for the Spartans fourth consecutive conference title fell one-point short last spring and Harper has 31 Spartans reporting to see if they can regain the top spot. Five of those are senior letter winners. Matt Tweedie brings leadership and experience to Richmond’s 4 x 800 and 4 x 400 relay teams. He also has lots of races under his belt in the 800 and 1,600-meters.
Brock Stokes returns to run the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200, along with the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Stokes had his best 200 time in the district meet last year. Taylor Teegarden runs the 4 x 200 and 4 x 400, with Ethan Turner returning to run in the 400 and Brock Bowers will be throwing the shot.
Harper said the experience of his distance runners will be a strength of this year’s Spartan track team, but improvement is needed elsewhere in order to challenge in conference
“We will need to improve over the season in jumps, throws and sprints to make a strong showing in conference,” he said.
Junior Daymean Probst enjoyed a good season last spring. Probst ran the 400 where he turned in a season-best time of 53.28 at districts. He was also a member of the 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relay teams, as well as the high jump. Seth Plymell, a sophomore, threw the discus last spring, while another sophomore, Dakota Boss, was a member of the 4 x 800 relay team.
