The Spartans and Lady Spartans began the new season hosting a quad on a cold and windy Thursday afternoon on the Robert Middleton Track. The six teams endured a brief hail storm just before the start of the meet with winds continuing at 25-35 mph throughout the late afternoon and early evening.
The Lady Spartans out-paced the field by chalking up 108 points, with Polo ending up a distant second with 59 points. Lathrop was third with 49, followed by KC Central with 31, Santa Fe with 15 and Van Horn with 7. Lathrop captured the boys’ side with 111 points, with Central totaling 53.5 points for second, while the Spartans placed third with 45. Polo was fifth with 25, followed by Van Horn with 19.5 and Santa Fe with 18.
The Lady Spartans had a half-dozen first-place finishes. Senior distance specialist Mary Beth Bailey took first in the 1,600 meters with 6 minutes, 14 seconds; and in the 3,200 with 13:28. Savannah Hamilton won the 800-meters with her time of 2:42.3.
Caitlynn Payton had the winning leap in the high jump with 4-8, while teammate Kenzie Maddox placed second with 4-6.
Richmond also had a pair of wins in field events with Paige O’Doniel taking the discus with a toss of 100 feet, while Nicole Johnson had the winning distance in the long jump with 14-0. The 4 x 800 relay team of Jocelyn Caldwell, Bailey, Elizabeth Windsor and Hamilton combined for the winning time of 10:51.5.
Freshman Sherri Doss had a pair of runner-up finishes for Richmond. She ran the 100 in 13.11 and the 200 in 28.56. Kerrigan Maddox placed fourth in the 200 with 30.31.
