Richmond School Board voted unanimously in closed session Tuesday to approve a three-year contract that will make Dr. Mike Aytes the district’s next superintendent.
Aytes, currently in his first year with R-XVI as assistant superintendent for curriculum and technology, will become superintendent July 1 and earn $110,000 a year. He replaces Dr. Damon Kizzire, who previously negotiated an early release from the last year of his contract to become superintendent in Kirksville.
The board’s decision to offer Aytes the position was made official Feb. 25 with a previous unanimous vote. The two sides agreed to continue ironing out the details and make it official this week.
And, during Tuesday’s meeting, board members openly discussed making a smooth transition from Kizzire to Aytes, all but making their vote in private a foregone conclusion.
