The Richmond Spartans battled visiting Higginsville through four quarters Tuesday night before dropping a 56-50 decision to the Huskers. The Husker win keeps the MRVC East race deadlocked between Higginsville and Knob Noster with one league game to go.
Both teams are 8-1 in conference with the Huskers traveling to Holden Friday night, while Knob Noster will host Lexington this evening.
The Huskers (22-1) won their 11th straight game with four players reaching double figures. Alex Nolte led the way with 16 points, while Landon Figg had 11 points, followed by Brett Nolte and Kyle Taylor with 10 apiece.
The Spartans held an early lead in front of the home crowd by taking a 12-10 advantage into the second period. Jake Gray got the Spartan offense going with 5 of his season-high 17 points. The senior point guard hit one of his four 3-point buckets in the opening frame.
“Jake played extremely well for us by getting us some needed offensive punch,” Richmond coach Duane Bastob said.
Gray also had a half dozen assists and 3 steals for the Spartans.
Higginsville came back in the second frame to take a 25-21 lead at the half, and then increased its lead to 42-35 entering the final 8 minutes.
