It’s 33 years since Ideal Industries held its first chili dinner – a year after the workshop opened in 1980.
It was more of an open house so residents could see the work the organization was providing for the community’s developmentally challenged adults.
It all took place in the old highway department building on Wollard Boulevard, one that Abbie Hockemeier owned and rented to the workshop.
“It wasn’t but 8,000 square feet, and once you put the offices and bathrooms in there wasn’t that much left,” Director Bob McCorkendale said. “We were just making it on our shoestrings.”
But it was the beginning of a love affair between Ideal and county residents. There was something about the work the organization did that warmed people’s hearts and inspired generosity – and still does.
