The Richmond Lady Spartans posted a season-high point total Friday night on the way to a 68-44 road win at Lexington. Richmond’s 15th win of the season ties the all-time mark for victories in a season, last set during the 2005-06 campaign.
“I’m proud of all the hard work these girls have put in from last season up until this point,” RHS coach David Littrell said. “They worked hard and have taken every challenge we have given them.”
Eight Lady Spartans scored as Richmond improved to 6-1 in the MRVC East to set up a showdown at league-leading Higginsville Tuesday night.
Jenny Simpson paced Richmond scoring with 26 points, with Kaylee Vantrump adding 15 points.
The Lady Spartan freshman added three more 3-point buckets to her season total. Vantrump’s first one of the night 28 seconds into the third period was her 60th of the year to surpass Patty Bowen’s school record of 59.
Lexington held a 6-4 lead early, but Simpson scored the next 8 points for Richmond and the Lady Spartans began to pull away as they scored in double figures in all four periods.
“That is probably the most balanced scoring from quarter to quarter that we’ve been all season,” Littrell said. “This is a good time of the year to be doing that.”
Richmond held a 19-10 lead after the first 8 minutes, and by halftime had built a 36-19 cushion.
