The Higginsville Lady Huskers knocked off their closest pursuers in the MRVC East Tuesday night to claim the league title.
The Higginsville defense put the clamps on the Richmond offense and for the third time this year, defeated the Lady Spartans 48-33.
It was Higginsville’s 23rd win in 25 contests, while giving the Lady Huskers a 9-0 league mark with one more MRVC East contest remaining at Holden this evening.
The Lady Spartans fall to 15-8 overall and 6-2 in conference with back-to-back league games remaining at Carrollton tonight and at home with the Lady Trojans again Friday night.
Things began well for the Lady Spartans, but the Higginsville zone defense kept Richmond from getting inside. The Lady Huskers also created turnovers that stalled the Richmond offense as well.
“We just gave them too many extra possessions,” Richmond coach David Littrell said. “We need to value the ball more. When we got ahead, I felt like we got a little anxious and forced too many things.”
Although disappointed by the loss, Littrell said his team continues to improve.
“For the most part, we defended well,” he said. “The kids played real hard. These girls have made great gains from where they were at the beginning of this year, and even from the end of last year. They just continue to work hard at getting better.”
