Two Spartan wrestlers advanced to the finals helping Richmond to a seventh-place overall showing at the MRVC tournament held at Excelsior Springs Friday and Saturday. Garrison Sanders grabbed second place in the 138-pound bracket and Wyatt Bulk placed second at 170 as the Spartans ended the tournament with 221 points – good for seventh overall, but second in the MRVC East.

Richmond ended up in 10th spot at last year’s tournament.

Holden totaled 267 points for the highest East total for the second year in a row, which was good for fifth overall, while Oak Grove battled with Odessa for the top finish overall with the Panthers edging their rivals 390.5-351 for the title.

Sanders won four of his first five matches. He recorded three falls and earned a bye. His only loss came in the third round when he lost a 15-9 decision to Pleasant Hill’s Olen Brattin. Sanders defeated Taylor Airrington 5-3 in the semifinals, which earned him a rematch with Brattin in the championship match. Brattin improved to 30-4 with a 5-1 decision over Sanders, who is now 25-13.

Bulk won his first two matches by decisions and then won by fall before drawing a bye in the fourth round. Bulk lost to Oak Grove’s Dalton Brinegar by fall in 1:16, but bounced back in the semifinal round to take an 8-6 decision over Dylan Lewis of Pleasant Hill. Once again, it was a rematch in the finals as Bulk met Brinegar, who upped his record to 31-3, with a fall over Bulk (20-12), in 1:23.

Three Spartans placed fourth.

Dominic Nobile won his first four matches of the tournament in the 126-pound bracket. He won his first two by decisions before receiving a bye and then winning by fall in 38 seconds over Chris Bussier of Knob Noster. He lost his final pool match by major decision and then lost by decision in the semifinals to Harrisonville’s Ty Cochran.

The Spartan freshman then lost a tough 4-3 decision in the third-place match to Shawn Kavades of Oak Grove.
