Letter: Salvation Army thanks Ray County residents for holiday generosity

To the Editor:

We would like to thank you for your support of The Salvation Army of Ray County 2013 Seasonal campaign program. This Christmas, $14,996 was raised by bell ringing, $1,765 in counter kettles: $1,067 with the silent auction and $6,483 in other contributions, which gives a total of $24,311 to be used for Ray County residents in need.
The money raised will be budgeted back in the 2014-15 fiscal year to help families with rent, utility, food and prescriptions.
This past Christmas, $5,975 in gift cards and $9,000 worth of toys were donated to assist 318 children of 145 families with food and toys this Christmas. Fifty-five seniors received food baskets. This was all made possible with your community support!
Many civic groups, organizations, scouts, churches, businesses, media, individuals, too many to list, rallied to support The Salvation Army’s work. In a time of economic uncertainty, we realize many sacrificed to help their neighbors and we give a big heartwarming thank you to all who donated food, gift cards, toys and time to bell ringing, and businesses which supported all our activities.
Families who come to us for help are assisted with immediate relief after an emergency situation such as a house fire, domestic violence, a rent payment to avoid eviction or utility payment to avoid disconnect. A caseworker is also assigned to work with the family in a direction of self-sufficiency.
We have noticed an increase of need among senior ctizens and families of minimum wage or on fixed incomes with medical, heating, transportation and food costs, all constantly increasing a family’s expenses and easily exceeding its income. This can create an emergency situation.
The work of The Salvation Army in the community is needed and very important.
Please know that your contributions and/or volunteering has helped to make a difference in the lives of those we serve. Without your help we would not be able to give so much to so many.
Our goal in the 2013 seasonal campaign was $21,400; we are $2,911 above our goal and wish to thank everyone for continued support!
We look forward to serving with you now as well as in the future and again next Christmas. Thank you for your support, prayers and contributions. May God bless you.
