The Richmond Lady Spartans took control of things early as they returned to MRVC East competition Friday night against visiting Holden. Richmond never trailed in a 46-24 win as the Lady Spartans handed the visitors their first conference loss in three games.
Richmond, now 2-1 in the league and 8-3 overall, bolted out to an 11-3 lead after 8 minutes and then stretched that cushion to 25-5 with less than 3 minutes remaining in the first half. The Lady Spartans took a 31-7 advantage into the halftime break.
Kaylee Vantrump led the Richmond scoring attack with a game-high 26 points – 19 of those coming in the first half. The Lady Spartan freshman hit back-to-back 3-pointers, followed by a steal and a layup, as Richmond opened the second period with 8 unanswered points.
With the lead, Richmond Coach David Littrell turned most of the second half over to his bench.
“I’m pleased with the adjustments we made in the second half,” he said. “We’ve been trying to increase our depth a little bit and with the big lead we were able to work on some things in game situations that we had been working on in practice. That might have taken us out of our tempo a little, but the girls adjusted.”
