Jo’s Jottings: Holiday remains a time for family, acts of random kindness

By Jo Ellen Dale

Hope all of you had a very Merry Christmas.  I certainly did.  My son Chuck came and brought dinner.  All  I had to provide was dessert and salad.  I would like to thank all my friends again for all the gifts and cards, just in case I failed to thank any of you with a note or in person.  I am glad that the weather shows signs of warming up today (Thursday, Dec. 26) and I may be able to get my car out to run some errands.

I am saddened by the loss of an old and dear friend, Alta Brown. We were neighbors for a number of years and in the same church.  I have never known a better person, a friend to all and always ready to help anyone in any way.  She will be missed by many of us.

I would like to thank the young man who stopped his truck and came to my rescue when I was struggling through the snow to get my paper and mail.  I was so wrapped up with a hood pulled down over my head that I did not recognize him and failed to get his name.  I am grateful and it proves that chivalry is not dead.

The day after Christmas, Chuck and I decided to eat out at the Tequila-Jalisco restaurant.  First we saw Tex Anderson and his daughter Carol, who were our neighbors when we lived on East Main Street. Then as we went to our table we spotted some cousins, Veronica Shane and her daughters, Monica and Rhonda, as well as some younger members of the family.

Friday, Chuck and I set out for Arkansas for a late family Christmas celebration.  We stopped at the Flying J as we usually do, and while there I heard someone call out, “ Memaw.”  When I turned around there were my grandson Matt, his wife Jami and their son Myers.  I thought to myself “quite a week for coincidences.”  We all arrived at the home of my daughter-in-law Liz Dale at about the same time.  The rest of the weekend was spent gorging ourselves on good food prepared by my daughter-in-law, exchanging gifts and watching the antics of 2-year-old Myers.  The weather was good, making it even more enjoyable.  Those present in addition to those already mentioned were Rob Devereux, Liz’s father, Chris Dale, and Jeff Dale. Sunday Chuck and I returned home, tired but happy.

On Sunday afternoon the Thurmans hosted a lovely Christmas party at the home of Levan Thurman.  Those attending were: Levan Thurman and his children, Bruce Thurman and Lynne Murray; Kathy Lasiter and Karley Vandiver; Valerie Bigby; John Michael Furgeson and Raymond Smith.

Bonnie Pointer McCalley and her daughter Elise spent Christmas Day in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Erik Pointer in Lexington..  When I saw Bonnie today she said that they had a wonderful time and so much good food that she was eating leftovers today.

In visiting with my grandson, Matt I was flattered to learn that a friend of his at work has been getting my column on line and seemed to like it.  The Internet is an incredible medium.  It reminded me that it pays to be careful what one puts out there for all to see.

Again I would like to remind everyone that the Richmond Kiwanis club will not meet again until Tuesday, January 7, 2014.  I miss the meetings because I see friends there and usually pick up some items of interest for this column.

Happy New Year to all and I hope to hear from more of you in 2014.
