Four Spartans finished as runners-up, while three more brought home third-place showings at Saturday’s Lathrop Invitational. Richmond took second place in the 22-team field with 231 points – with the host Mules grabbing first with 265.5 points. Maysville was third with 198 and Mid Buchanan took fourth spot with 176.
Four Spartan junior varsity wrestlers also earned enough points to put them in 16th place for the day.
Braidn Ford was a runner-up in the 106-pound bracket. Ford advanced by winning his first three matches by falls before dropping his fifth match of the day. The freshman recorded falls in 1:32, 49 seconds and 1:37 before losing by major decision to Maysville’s Cody Graven, 15-7.
Dylan Caldwell went 3-1 in earning a second-place finish at 120 for Richmond. He won by fall in 3:30, a 4-3 decision and a technical fall before losing in his final match of the day. Caldwell lost by fall in 38 seconds to Lathrop’s Hunter Dalinghaus.
Dominic Nobile was a runner-up in the 126-pound bracket. Nobile lost the championship match to Lathrop’s Caleb Osborn by a 7-4 decision. Nobile advanced to the finals with a technical fall, a fall and a major decision before winning by fall over Kurt Wood of Lathrop JV in 59 seconds.
