Kaleb Heber placed second and Brock Stokes took third place to help the Richmond Spartan wrestlers bring home a third-place trophy at the Battle of Lexington Tournament held at Wentworth Military Academy.
The Spartans ended the two-day, 23-team event with 377 points to edge Lawson by 2 for third spot. Blair Oaks easily won the team title with 564 points, while Lathrop finished as the runner-up with 484.5 points.
Heber advanced to the quarterfinals of the 220-pound bracket with a fall and four byes. He lost by fall in the quarterfinals, but bounced back with a fall over Sam Hasekamp of Centralia in the semifinals and then lost by fall to once-beaten Josh Riggs of Maysville in the finals.
Stokes won his first four matches – two by byes, before losing a 9-4 decision in the 160-pound class. The Spartan senior lost a 7-2 decision in the quarterfinals, but bounced back with a 13-7 win in the next round. Stokes lost his semifinal match to eventual champion Curtis Quick of Sherwood by a 6-3 decision, but came back to win the third-place match by fall over Dawson Beane of Lathrop.
Freshman Braidn Ford placed fourth a 113. He won his opening match by fall over Solomon Tevis of Holden and then drew byes in the remaining four matches of his pool. Ford was a 6-3 winner in the quarterfinal over Chase Aldrich of Carrollton, but lost in the semis to Cody Kistner of Lathrop and then lost in the third-place match in a rematch with Tevis by a fall.
