The Richmond Lady Spartan junior varsity hit some much-needed free throws to defeat tournament host Higginsville to win the Husker JV tournament.
Richmond converted 16 of 34 free throws in the title game against the Lady Huskers to take a 39-34 decision. Higginsville visited the stripe 42 times in the finals, but was able to make just 8 of them.
The Lady Huskers held a 19-4 lead after one period, but Richmond cut the deficit to 20-17 by the intermission. The Lady Spartans outscored Higginsville 13-5 in the third frame thanks in part to making 5 of 8 free throws. Each team scored 9 points in the final quarter with the Lady Spartans making 7 of 17 from the stripe.
Cassidy Layman and Hailey Knutter led Richmond scoring with 9 points apiece. Kristin Vantrump chipped in 8 points as she converted 6 of 9 free throws. Randa Kiser added 4 points.
