After dropping their season opener to Lawson, the Orrick Lady Bearcats bounced back with a pair of dominating victories this week. The Lady Bearcats fell to visiting Lawson 47-39, but followed that setback with a 57-11 home win over Mid Buchanan and a 65-36 victory at West Platte.
Orrick coach Mitch Comstock is pleased with taking two of three to start the new season.
“I feel like we are playing well for this time of the year,” he said. “Obviously we would have liked to have gotten the win versus Lawson, but compared to the game we played them last year we are far ahead of where we were at this time a year ago.”
Lawson outscored Orrick 18-10 in the final 8 minutes to grab the win on the Lady Bearcats’ home court. Kerstin Huffman scored 18 points and Keely Simmons added 15 to lift Lawson to the win. Orrick also had two players reach double digits with Sam Fulte hitting for 14 points, while Madison Winters chipped in 13.
Orrick held a 12-9 advantage after 8 minutes and took a 16-14 advantage into the break. The Lady Cardinals battled back to tie the game 29-all entering the final period.
Fulte hit 7 of 13 from the field and also grabbed 9 rebounds. Winters had 9 boards to go along with a pair of assists and 2 steals. Shaina Cook scored 5 points with 7 rebounds and 2 assists for Orrick.
