The Richmond Spartans will be gunning for their third consecutive third-place finish at the Husker Classic in Higginsville. The Spartans began the week with a 75-37 drubbing of Windsor Monday night, but fell Wednesday night to Odessa 55-45 to Odessa. Richmond will meet either Higginsville or Oak Grove Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Odessa spent most of the night attacking inside to hand the Spartans their first loss of the season. The Bulldogs also got balanced scoring with four players reaching double digits and were helped by 12 Richmond turnovers.

“Their height at guard really gave us some trouble,” Spartan coach Duane Bastob said. “We had a tough time throwing around them and they got a lot of steals and most of those led to easy baskets at the other end.”

Calieb Bennett led the Odessa scoring with 13 points, while Cody Behrman and Colby Nickels chipped in 12 apiece and Ryan Palmer added 10. Reid Summers followed up his 40-point effort against Windsor Monday night with 30 points Wednesday. Quinton Maxwell had 9 points, with Kody Reed and Philip Kincaid each adding a 3-point bucket.

The Spartans were controlling the rebounding early in the game as they jumped to a 10-5 lead. Odessa answered with the final 5 points of the first period to tie the game and then took the lead for good by beginning the second quarter with a 10-3 run. The Bulldogs held a 23-17 advantage at the half, and then were able to get inside the Richmond defense in the third period. The Bulldogs went on a 12-3 run – 8 of those coming from the paint.
