Children in Richmond, Carrollton and Marshall auditioned for the second annual “Nutcracker All Jazzed Up,” sponsored by Shapes Dance and Acro Studio.
It will be performed the weekend of Dec. 14-15, including a show at the historic Farris Theatre Dec. 14.
Auditions were open to all children in the community and there was no cost to the performers to be part of the performance. In 2011, Shapes Dance and Acro established a non-profit performance company that puts on the Nutcracker performance every other year.
“We want to give children an opportunity to be part of a Christmas tradition that allows them to perform for their family and friends, as well as being active in the performing arts,” said Artistic Director Leigh Murray. “This production is not exclusive to Shapes students, but includes all children in the community that wanted to be a part of a special performance in our local small towns. It allows children to gain confidence and experience performing in front of a live audience without having the cost of costumes and rehearsal fees.”
Over 70 children ages 3 and up are part of this year’s holiday rendition of Nutcracker. The production includes the traditional ballets of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Waltz of the Flowers, but it is sprinkled with tap dancing reindeer and Arabian acrobats hanging from the ceiling.
All instruction and choreography is volunteered by experienced dance instructors from the area and many parent volunteers who have worked to help build sets, make costumes, help with rehearsals and make programs.
“It is very exciting to see kids come together from different towns and communities and work together for a common goal,” Shapes Dance and Acro owner Tracey Wozny said. We are so excited for our upcoming performances and we hope the community will come be a part of this big event.”
The Nutcracker All Jazzed Up will be performed at the Carrollton Thomas Auditorium Saturday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m., Richmond’s Farris Theater Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m., and the Mabee-Eckilson Theater in Marshall Sunday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. The cost per ticket is $5. All proceeds go to the venue rentals, costume and set design in order to keep our Nutcracker a tradition in the community. Tickets can be purchased at any Shapes Dance and Acro location.
