The Richmond Lady Spartans picked up a confidence-building win Monday night as they held off Santa Fe, 48-47 in the RHS gym. The Lady Spartans improved to 6-3 with the win over the 5-2 Chiefs.
“It was a great win for our young group against a very athletic Santa Fe team,” RHS coach David Littrell said. “Both teams kept each other’s transition game in check so we both had to play a half-court game and that was one of our better half-court efforts of the year.”
Kaylee Vantrump hit five 3-point buckets on the way to scoring a game-high 22 points for the Lady Spartans. Brooke Barnett led Santa Fe with 15 points, with Kylie Limback adding 10 and Lexi Smith chipped in 9.
Santa Fe managed to convert only half of its 20 free throw attempts in the contest with Richmond making just 5 of 9 from the stripe.
Santa Fe took advantage of a lot of second-chance opportunities in the first quarter – especially in the final 2 minutes to take a 12-11 lead in a back-and-forth opening period. The Lady Chiefs held a 17-14 lead early in the second quarter before Richmond went on a 10-0 run behind back-to-back 3-pointers from Vantrump.
“The guards did a great job of pressuring their guards and that made it tough on them to run their offense, especially in the second quarter,” Littrell said. “We were able to extend our pressure a little and kept them getting the ball inside.”
