After battling their way to an overtime win against O’Hara in the tournament opener, the Richmond Lady Spartans struggled with back-to-back losses to wrap up the Husker Classic.
Richmond lost the third-place game to host Higginsville Saturday 49-33 after falling to undefeated Brookfield 54-36 in Thursday night’s semifinal.
The Lady Spartans will take a 4-2 record into this evening’s MRVC East opener at home against Knob Noster.
Richmond could not get the offense going in either game. Brookfield’s guards controlled the night in the semifinals on the offensive and defensive ends. Most of the Lady Bulldogs points came as a result of second-chance points. Brookfield hit the boards for 37 rebounds – 19 of those on the offensive end.
Brookfield held a 13-8 lead with 3:32 remaining in the opening quarter, but then began to take control. The Lady Bulldogs scored the final 7 points of the period and began to gradually pull away in the second quarter.
Brookfield took a 35-20 cushion into the intermission and held a 43-24 advantage entering the final 8 minutes.
Alesa Frey paced Brookfield with a game-high 20 points, with Samantha Gonzalez chipping in 13 points, while Bailey Parks scored 10 points with 8 rebounds.
