After cruising to a win in their I-70 Conference Tournament opener at home Monday night, the Orrick Lady Bearcats battled past Santa Fe in the semifinals Wednesday night and into Friday’s title game.
Orrick won its fifth game in six outings to get past the Chiefs Wednesday 48-42 and will play St. Paul Lutheran for the tournament championship at 9 p.m. The top-seeded Lady Bearcats opened the tournament with a 52-32 victory over Concordia Monday night.
Wednesday night’s game was a bit closer with Orrick holding a 13-12 lead over Santa Fe after the first 8 minutes. The Lady Bearcats opened a 25-19 advantage by halftime, but the Chiefs fought their way back in the third quarter and pulled to within a free throw, 35-34, entering the fourth period.
Orrick held off the Chiefs with a 13-8 advantage in the final 8 minutes.
Madison Winters hit 8 of her 14 shots from the floor and 3 of 5 free throw attempts to lead Orrick with 20 points. She also hit the boards to pull down 7 rebounds – all of them coming on the defensive end of the floor, to go along with a team-high 4 assists. Sam Fulte connected on 5 of her 6 field goals and made her only free throw attempts on the way to an 11-point effort.
