The Richmond Spartans will have to quickly put Friday night’s 46-0 win over Northeast behind them. Richmond, now 7-3, will meet another 7-3 squad Wednesday in the second round of the Class 3, District 8 playoffs when they take on the Dragons at Cameron.
Cameron rolled Central Academy 60-8 in its district opener Thursday night which gives them a head start in preparations.
“They are a day ahead,” Richmond coach Rob Bowers said Friday night following the Spartans’ victory. “They played Thursday night so they’ve been working on us all day today and were here watching us tonight. We have to catch up and get ready to go – get dialed up and play well Wednesday night.”
The Dragons return eight starters from a team that posted a 2-9 record one year ago. Most of those returnees are seniors who have been in the starting lineup since their sophomore seasons.
The Dragons like to run and have a good stable of ball carriers led by 5-6, 160-pound senior Joe Pratt, who has rushed for 1,083 yards on 187 carries with a dozen touchdowns. Another senior, Dakota Calhoon, a 6-0, 155-pounder, has 913 yards on 121 attempts with 9 touchdowns.
Calhoon, the quarterback, has thrown just 74 passes for the season and completed 25 for 374 yards, 4 touchdowns and 4 interceptions.
The Dragons opened the year with three straight wins, but then lost their next three as Midland Empire Conference play began. Cameron lost a 17-14 decision to visiting Chillicothe, and followed with a 44-14 loss at top-ranked Maryville and a 25-19 home loss to Savannah.
