Boosted by having five runners in the Top 15, the Richmond Spartans claimed the Class 2, District 8 cross country championship Saturday at Smith’s Fork in Smithville. The Spartans ended the day with 60 points to edge runner-up Lawson by 6 points in the eight-team field. The top two teams, and 15 runners not attending those schools, advance to Saturday’s state meet at the Oak Hills Golf Center in Jefferson City.
Senior Matt Tweedie led the Spartan runners by taking second place. Tweedie ran the 5K course in 17 minutes, 49.5 seconds, with Bishop LeBlond’s Sam Hausman crossing the line first with a time of 17:30.5.
Roy Branson captured eighth place for Richmond with 18:31.7, followed by Wyatt Bulk who placed 13th in 18:41.3, and Kody Reed who turned in a time of 18:44.2 to finish 15th.
