The Spartan cross country squad had its highest finish of the season Wednesday. The Spartans took second place at the Cass Midway Invitational meet held in Cleveland. Richmond, with two runners finishing in the top 10 and four finishing in the top 15, ended the afternoon with 61 points – just 6 behind first-place Lone Jack. KC Lutheran finished third in the eight-team field with 70 points.
Matt Tweedie was the individual runner-up. The Spartan senior crossed the line in 18 minutes, 26 seconds, which was just 10 seconds behind Cole Shope of Lone Jack. Wyatt Bulk placed ninth for the Spartans with his time of 19:21, while Roy Branson edged teammate Kody Reed for 12th place. Branson finished in 19:38, with Reed 20 seconds behind.
Also for Richmond, Taylor Teegarden was 26th in 20:48, followed by Zach Isetan, 31st (21:08) and Jackson Pence, 35th (21:23).
The Spartan junior varsity defeated two other teams. Richmond had four of its runners in the top 10 and ended with 28 points to edge Lone Jack by 3 points, while Lakeland was third.
