Netters take third in conference tournament

The Lady Spartan tennis team turned in an outstanding performance Thursday afternoon with a third-place finish in Odessa at the MRVC tournament. Richmond ended the day with 17 points, to finish behind tournament champion Grain Valley with 52 points and runner-up Harrisonville with 22.

Knob Noster placed fourth with 14 points, followed by Odessa (12), Higginsville (8), Lexington (6), Excelsior Springs (4) and Carrollton (0).

Bailey Busse captured the lone first-place medal for the Lady Spartans.

The Richmond junior won her second consecutive MRVC No. 1 singles title with an 8-2 victory over Grain Valley’s Nathalia Barr in the finals. Busse, the No. 1 seed, drew a first-round bye and then defeated Sierra Payne of Carrollton 8-0, followed by an 8-1 decision in the semifinals over Allison Maple of Odessa.

Richmond grabbed three fourth-place finishes in singles play. Kalynn Persell advanced to the third-place match in the No. 2 singles bracket where she fell to Madison Ault of Odessa in a hard-fought 7-9 final. Persell defeated Sarah Vereecke of Higginsville in the first round 8-5, but lost to Jessica Nichols of Harrisonville in the semifinals 1-8. Cora List finished fourth in the No. 4 singles bracket. She defeated Knob Noster’s Jessie Axton 8-6 in the first match, but lost in the semifinals to Darby Scharfenkamp of Grain Valley, 1-8. In the third-place match Miller was defeated by Ashlyn Howard of Higginsville, 3-8.
