The Richmond Lady Spartans advanced to the semifinals of the Class 1, District 14 tennis tournament, but were eliminated by a very strong Grain Valley squad.
Richmond ended the team portion of the schedule with a 10-8 overall record to go along with a 4-4 MRVC East showing.
The Lady Spartans hosted Lexington in the district opener Monday and had little trouble advancing with a 5-1 victory. Wednesday, Richmond met the Lady Eagles on their home court. Grain Valley, winners of 16 of 17 matches this season, advanced to the finals with a 5-0 victory.
“Grain Valley is just a very, very tough team to say the least,” Richmond coach Duane Bastob said.
The Lady Eagles defeated Higginsville in the finals Wednesday afternoon, 5-0.
Richmond’s No. 2 singles, Kalynn Persell lost to Kayelee Smith 0-6, 2-6. Lauren Barger lost at No. 3 to Hannah Wichmann, 0-6, 2-6; No four Cora List fell to Darby Scharfenkamp 1-6, 0-6; No. 5 Sami Miller lost 1-6, 0-6 to Chelsea Gabriel and Bre Miller lost to Mikaylan Sickle 0-6, 0-6 at No. 6.
The Lady Spartans’ No. 1 singles player, Bailey Busse was on the short end of a 3-6, 5-6 score to Nathalia Barr when Holden won the fifth match to clinch the victory.
