After dropping a tough 5-4 home loss to Knob Noster on Monday, the Lady Spartan tennis team hosted six other schools Wednesday for the Richmond Invitational held at Maurice Roberts Park.
Richmond placed fourth in the seven-team field behind Moberly, Grain Valley and Winnetonka. Bailey Busse rolled through the singles bracket to take first place for the Lady Spartans.
The Richmond junior drew a first-round bye and did not lose a game throughout the afternoon as she chalked up three consecutive 8-0 victories on the way to the title. Busse defeated Emily McCarter of Moberly in the finals. Kalynn Persell lost her first match of the day by a 5-8 decision to Lexington’s Allison Lueck. Persell won her first consolation-bracket meeting 6-4 over Michelle Morris of Odessa and then got past Emily Gregson, also of Odessa, 6-4. She was eliminated in the consolation semifinals 5-7.
Cora List and Bre Miller won their opening-round doubles match 8-5 over the Lexington duo of Mikaylin Turner and Kayleah Tye, but fell to Amber Morris and Kelsey Fanning of Moberly 0-8 to fall into the consolation bracket. They opened consolation play with a 7-6 win over Carrollton’s Madyson Fry and Shelby Persinger, but dropped a 1-6 decision to a Winnetonka duo.
