Bibles are a hot commodity at Ray County Jail.
Bill Purcell, who ministers to the prison population at the jail, has distributed more than 200 Bibles this year to this group – and he needs more.
“The problem is when we order and get them, they go out as quickly as we get them,” he said.
Purcell is asking the community for soft-cover Bibles or copies of the New Testament with psalms or proverbs. Because of jail restrictions, he cannot accept Bibles that have staples.
Purcell offers Bible study and prayer to four groups of inmates every Monday morning, lasting two hours. Jailers, who Purcell says are “very accommodating,” are at each session.
“(It’s) very rewarding,” Purcell said, adding that some inmates express appreciation for the visits.
“Jesus tells us to visit the prisoner, whether they’re guilty to innocent. That spoke to my heart.”
