Richmond Lady Spartans exploded for 19 runs in their opening game of the Higginsville Tournament Saturday, but then dropped a pair of tough losses to end the day with a 1-2 showing.
Richmond, now 8-10 overall, opened the chilly day with a 19-4 win over Adrian. The Lady Spartans had just 7 hits in their win over the Lady Blackhawks, but were helped by 3 Adrian errors and 11 walks. Seven of those free passes were issued in Richmond’s 11-run first inning. Richmond added 3 more runs in the second and the final 4 in the third. Elizabeth Windsor led the way with 3 Lady Spartan hits as the Richmond leadoff hitter scored 3 runs. Mallory Cole, Tatum Ramsey and Paige O’Doniel had one hit apiece.
Karen Jaggars earned the win as she faced the final 16 batters in relief of Nicole Camp. Jaggars surrendered 2 runs, one earned, with 3 strikeouts.
Oak Grove scored 7 runs in the top of the fourth on the way to a 9-3 win over the Lady Spartans in the second round. The Lady Panthers took advantage of three Richmond errors in the fourth inning as Oak Grove erased a 3-2 Lady Spartan lead.
