Richmond junior Bailey Busse wrapped up an outstanding tennis season with a sixth-place showing at the Class 1 MSHSAA tennis championships. Busse lost her first match at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, but battled her way back through the consolation bracket to earn a spot in the fifth-place match.
“Bailey really had a bad draw,” RHS coach Duane Bastob said. “She did a great job of fighting her way into the fifth-place match. I know she’s disappointed, but it was still a great season.”
Busse, the district and sectional champion, met Angeline Veronikis of MICDS in the opening round and dropped a 1-6, 0-6 decision. Veronikis would go on to finish third.
Later that day, Busse won all three matches in the consolation bracket. She opened with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Hally Piontek of Warrensburg.
