With senior Matthew Tweedie leading the way, the Richmond Spartans began their cross country season Thursday with a sixth-place finish at the Oak Grove Invitational. Tweedie finished seventh in the 5K race with a time of 18 minutes, 53 seconds. He was the lone Spartan in the top 10, in the individual competition that was won by DJ Stahl of Smithville, who crossed the line in 18:21. George McMillan of Platte County edged Smithville’s Chris Rick by .5 seconds to finish as the runner-up in 18:35.
Richmond ended the afternoon with 152 points in the 13-team field that featured mostly larger schools.
Smithville easily took first place with 45 points, while Park Hill placed second with 118 and Platte County totaled 127 points for a third-place showing. Odessa grabbed fourth with 137 and Holden was 2 points ahead of Richmond to take fifth. Oak Grove was seventh with 168 and Lawson placed eighth with 180.
