Netters come close to upset win

By Russ Green-Sports Editor

The Lady Spartan tennis team almost pulled off a win over the eight-time defending conference champions Tuesday night at Maurice Roberts Park.

Higginsville won the final two singles matches to pull off a 5-4 win over the Lady Spartans.

Sami Miller dropped her No. 5 singles match to Ashtyn Howard 0-8, and Bre Miller battled Allison Poynter in a match that RHS coach Duane Bastob said could have gone either way. Poynter was able to hang on for Higginsville for an 8-6 decision in the deciding match of the afternoon.

Bailey Busse recorded another shutout victory for Richmond at No. 1 singles with her 8-0 decision over Elizabeth Twyman, followed by Kalynn Persell getting past Sarah Vereecke 9-7 in the No. 2 singles match. Lauren Barger fell to Emily Runyan at No. 3, 0-8, but Cora List came back with an 8-5 decision at No. 4 over Rachel Smith.
