Lady Spartans survive in 9 to remain unbeaten in league

ck from a 4-run deficit twice Tuesday afternoon and rallied to send their MRVC East battle at Southview Park with visiting Carrollton into extra innings. Alexis Thaxton scored on an error in the bottom of the ninth inning to keep the Lady Spartans undefeated in league play with a 9-8 victory.

However, there was not a lot of celebrating for the Lady Spartans. Thaxton landed the wrong way on an ankle when she slid into home plate and suffered a severe sprain and remained on the ground for several minutes while being tended to by medical personnel. The sophomore first baseman began the rally with a single – her second one of the day. Nicole Camp, who battled her way through the Carrollton lineup all afternoon from the pitcher’s circle, followed with another single.

With one out and Hannah Millsap at the plate, the Carrollton catcher was charged with a passed ball and then her throw to third base to get Thaxton sailed into right field. Thaxton rounded the bag and slid home with Richmond’s third league win and fifth in nine games overall.

Carrollton, now 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the MRVC East, scored a run in the first and 3 more in the second before the Lady Spartans could get on the board. Singles by Mallory Cole and Elizabeth Windsor, along with a double my Madison Cole cut the visitor’s lead to 4-2, but the Lady Trojans added 2 more runs in the top of the fourth. Madison Cole began another Richmond rally in the fifth with a one-out double, followed by back-to-back singles by Windsor and Tatum Ramsey, a double by Paige O’Doniel and two more singles by Thaxton and Camp.
