The Richmond Lady Spartan tennis team opened MRVC East matches with a home victory over Lexington Tuesday and followed that with a big non-conference road win at Excelsior Springs Wednesday.

Richmond improved to 2-1 overall Wednesday by edging the Lady Tigers on their home court. After losing two of the three doubles matches, the Lady Spartans won the final two singles matches to grab a 5-4 victory.

Bailey Busse and Kalynn Persell opened the day with an 8-0 No. 1 doubles victory over Kaitlyn Withrow and Marissa Fish, but Excelsior Springs took the final two doubles matches.

The Lady Spartans trailed 4-3 heading into the final two singles matches of the day. Sami Miller battled her way past Hannah Willadsen for a 9-7 Richmond win at No. 5. After trailing most of the way, Bre Miller fought back in the No. 6 singles match for an 8-6 win over Morgan Reeve to give the Lady Spartans the win.

“Both Sami and Bre played great in the clutch,” Richmond coach Duane Bastob said. “Sami was down early in her match and kept fighting her way back and Bre was down most of her match and came back and won.”

Busse easily won her singles match 8-0 over Withrow and Persell was an 8-5 winner over Martinez at No. 2 singles. Lauren Barger lost at No. 3 to Maggie Mohn and Cora List fell at No. 4 to Marissa Fish by identical 5-8 decisions.

Barger and Sami Miller lost their No. 2 doubles match 3-8 to Martinez and Mohn, while List and Bre Miller fell at No. 3 to Willadsen and Reeve 4-8 at No. 3.
