Higginsville continued its quest for a ninth straight MRVC East tennis title Thursday afternoon by defeating a stubborn visiting Lady Spartan squad. The Lady Huskers captured two of the three doubles matches and four of the six singles to claim their second league meeting in as many tries for a 6-3 victory.
“It was a hard-fought match,” Richmond coach Duane Bastob said. “We played well and competed hard.”
Richmond’s No. 1 singles player, Bailey Busse, recorded another shutout victory with an 8-0 decision over Elizabeth Twyman, but the Lady Huskers won the next two singles contests. Kalynn Persell dropped a tough 5-8 match at No. 2 to Sarah Vereecke, and Lauren Barger fell to Emily Runyan at No. 3 by a 1-8 decision.
Cora List got Richmond back in the win column by outlasting Rachel Smith 9-8 at No. 4. Higginsville claimed the final two singles matches as Richmond’s Sami Miller fell to Ashtyn Howard at No. 5, 1-8, and Bre Miller dropped a 6-8 final at No. 6 to Allison Poynter.
