Helen L. Hays, 81, of Norborne, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013 at North Kansas City Hospital, North Kansas City.
Helen was born Aug. 4, 1932 in Norborne, to Clarence and Zelma (Davidson) Horine. She first married Howard C. Kugler of Stet, in 1950; he preceded her in death in 1960; she later married Francis “Franny” Hays March 1, 1963; he survives of the home.
Helen was a loving homemaker. She was a member of the Bethany Church of the Brethren in Stet, and was the church secretary for several years. She was a 1950 graduate of Richmond High School. She was a member of the Stet card playing club and ladies aide quilting. Helen was an avid bowler. She had lived in the Stet area most of her life.
Additional survivors include, two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Penny Kugler of Richmond, and Gary and Barbara Kugler of Stet; one daughter, Carolyn Shaffer of Cowgill; one step-daughter, Cheryl Barnes and her husband, John of Independence; three sisters, Mary Thompson of San Tan Valley, Ariz., Lydia Engelage of Surprise, Ariz. and Bonnie Davenport and her husband, Paul of Grandview; one half-brother, Sam Clemens of Lake Waukomis; and one-half sister, Janet Padgett and her husband, Gary of Gardner, Kan.; and seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survives.
In addition to her parents and first husband, Helen was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Horine and Donald Horine; and one son-in-law, Stan Shaffer.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Bethany Church of the Brethren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation will be Saturday, Sept. 7, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Burial will be in the Richmond Memory Gardens Cemetery in Richmond.
