Setsuko Y. Kirkland, 86, of Richmond, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2013 at Shirkey Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond.
Setsuko was born Nov. 13, 1926 in Kobe, Japan to Tchiro and Kinuyo Yogoro. She married French Bates Kirkland of Vibbard, March 29, 1976 in Kauai, Hawaii; he survives of the home.
Setsuko graduated from Himeji Girls High School, Himeji City, Japan, and English Typist School, Matsue City, Japan, then studied nights at Tsudajuku English Shorthand School, Toyko, while working at Philco Company in Tokyo as a secretary. She was a member of the Richmond United Christian Presbyterian Church, and the Esther Circle where she was the treasurer for many years. Setsuko had lived in Japan and Hawaii before moving to the Richmond area in 1980. Setsuko played the guitar, organ and piano and enjoyed swimming and cooking. She loved children and took her nieces Miyuki and Futami shopping, to the movies and skating often.
Additional survivors include one sister, Sachiko Yumiba of Tokyo, Japan; several nieces and nephews; and great friends, David and Harriet Minnick of Richmond.
In addition to her parents, Setsuko was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Richmond United Christian Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. at the Richmond United Christian Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be Friday, Aug. 9, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Lavelock Cemetery in Hardin.
