Nick Chapman begins his head coaching career at Orrick High School Friday as he takes his Bearcats to Faucett to meet the Mid Buchanan Dragons. The Dragons will also be unveiling their new head coach as Ron Musser takes over the program.
Musser retired from East Buchanan after 16 years there and 29 years overall following the 2007 season. Musser led East Buchanan to a pair of Class 1 quarterfinal appearances along with a runner-up finish in 2004.
Chapman’s young Bearcat squad opens the new season by playing their first three games on the road. Following Friday night’s 7 p.m. kickoff, Orrick will travel to Concordia for back-to-back dates with Concordia High School and St. Paul. Chapman said it’s a good way to be thrown into the fire.
“It’s going to be good for the kids just to get that experience going,” he said. “What’s nice is we’ll have more games at home later in the season once we’ve been in our system a few games and hopefully when things are starting to click a little bit.”
The Bearcats hosted Polo, Cass Midway and Lone Jack in their jamboree last week. Orrick gave up a long touchdown run to Polo on the very first play, but Chapman said after that play, he felt his team settled down and played a little better.
