Marguerite Montgomery Thurman, 84, of Richmond, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospice House in Kansas City, Mo. following a series of strokes.
Marguerite Helen Montgomery was born July 20, 1929 in Leesburg, Fla., the daughter of Dargan Edwin and Harriette (Meadows) Montgomery. Following graduation from high school, she attended William Jewell College in Liberty.
In the spring of 2008, Marguerite Montgomery recorded series of sessions of her best loved songs…Live at Buck’s. Marguerite had a rich tradition of creating beautiful music at piano
venues across the globe, from New York to San Francisco from the Netherlands to the Caribbean, her music has been enjoyed time and time again. She was classically trained in piano and had been coached in Opera by the famed Lily Pons.
Marguerite married W. Levan Thurman July 15, 2011. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Dargan Edwin Montgomery, Jr. and her sister, Mary Lee Montgomery.
She is survived by her husband, W. Levan Thurman of the home, her son, Christopher Wells, Seattle, Wash., her daughter, Carol Shumaker, Louisville, Ky., her sister, Shirley Ann Montgomery Bloss, Alexandria, La. She is also survived by her step-son, Bruce L. Thurman, Kansas City, Mo., step-daughter, Lynne C. Murray, Leawood, Kans. and two step-grandchildren, Clare Hubbell, Minneapolis, Minn. and Ann Hubbell, Columbia.
Marguerite was a member of the Richmond United Methodist Church where she served at the church pianists.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Richmond United Methodist Church with visitation preceding at 1 p.m. Interment will be at Duncan Memorial Cemetery in Crestwood, Ky.
The family suggest contributions to either the Richmond United Methodist Church or the Friends of the Farris, Richmond, in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
