Tough conditions greeted the Richmond Lady Spartan golf team and three others Wednesday at the season-opening date in Warrensburg. With temperatures well into the 90’s, the Lady Spartans shot 204 to finish second in the quad meet at Hidden Pines Country Club.
The host Lady Tigers had the low team total for the day with 174, followed by Grain Valley with 239 and Odessa with 236.
Lady Spartan coach Murray Dennis was pleased with how his girls played in their first match, especially with the heat.
“I know they were somewhat nervous, being the first match of the season,” he said. “I thought they handled everything pretty well and pretty close to how I thought they would. They weren’t our best scores, but close to our averages so far during practice and we know that matches are a little different.”
Warrensburg’s Taylor Black was the medalist for the afternoon with a one-over par, 37. Becca Westbrook had the low Richmond round with 48, while Maddy Zeller and Makenzi Turley each carded a 51.
“I was very pleased with how Becca played,” Dennis said. “She has worked extremely hard in the off-season and summer and it’s paying off. Maddy and Makenzi also shot better than their averages so far which is great to see.”
