Donald W. Railey, 85, of Excelsior Springs , died Saturday Aug. 17, 2013 at the Northcare Hospice in North Kansas City after suffering a stroke August 8.
Donald was born in Richmond, Friday, July 13, 1928 to Virgil and Beulah Railey, the youngest of four siblings. He married the love of his life, Iris Mae Branson, March 25, 1950. Together, they raised four children: Gary, Monte, Robin and Bruce, plus oversaw a brood of 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. They celebrated their 60th Wedding anniversary shortly before her passing in 2010.
Donald retired from Ford Motor Company in 1983 after 30 years of service. His retirement lasted almost as long as his employment (thanks FoMoCo!!). A proud union member, he was involved in UAW Retiree activities for many years. He and Iris loved to dance, camp, listen to Country music and enjoy family. After Iris’ death, Donald spent many an hour driving the countryside in search of good biscuits and gravy.
He is survived by his sister Thelma Jacobs of Richmond, daughter Robin (Dave) Walters of rural Lawson, sons Gary Railey of Crystal Lakes, Monte (Michelle) Railey of Missouri City, Bruce (Mary) Railey of Owens Crossroads, Ala., Grandchildren Prema Railey (David Powell) of Kansas City, Mo.. Philip (Jennifer) Cowick of Greenwood, Dylan (Laura) Walters of Lathrop, Sara Vick of Bowling Green, Ky., Cheyenne (Joe) Tavares of Kansas City, Mo., Anna (Lance) Barlow of Slater, Nathan (Maureen) Walters of Rio de Janeiro Brazil, Ian (Dana) Walters of Holt, David Railey, Campbell Railey, Luke Railey and Mary Grace Railey of Owens Crossroads, Ala.. Surviving great-grandchildren include Destiny Walters of Lathrop, Andrew Miller of Bowling Green, Dorian Walters of Lathrop, Aspen Vick of Bowling Green, Tristan Walters of Holt, Kendall Tavares of Kansas City, Cooper Walters of Holt, Mason Tavares of Kansas City, Graysen Cowick of Greenwood, Donovan Walters of Lathrop, Carter Railey Barlow of Slater, Daxton Walters of Lathrop and Collins Grace Tavares of Kansas City. Uncle Donald left many loving nieces and nephews as well.
In addition to Iris, he was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jewell Eugene Railey and Loren Railey, and Great-grandson Dallas Gantt.
Cremation with urn placement at Hickory Grove Cemetery in rural Ray County. Honorary pallbearers are Patrick Railey, J.W. Branson, David Curry, Terry Dickey, Clarence Robert Branson, Johnny Branson, Earl Branson, and Raymond Branson.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at the Polley Funeral Home Excelsior Springs Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, in the Chapel.
