The Richmond Area Chamber of Commerce brings its family-friendly American Celebration to Southview Park Friday, June 28. Rain date is Saturday, June 29.

The night kicks off with a free swim at Southview Pool from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Ray County Honor Guard will conduct a patriotic ceremony in honor of the nation’s birthday with a flag raising, National Anthem, 21-gun salute and Taps beginning at 6:45 p.m.

The party gets popping at 7 with music and entertainment provided by Rob “Robman” Kinnard’s D.J. service Yo! Baby, Yo! Entertainment. Kansas City Chiefs mascot KC Wolf will be out to greet kids 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event also features a caricature artist and balloon artist Michelle Woods.

Kids who want to compete in old-fashioned contests should come hungry.  Contests, starting around 7 p.m., include pie-eating, watermelon-eating and bubble gum-blowing contests, with the top three finishers in each contest receiving medals. Those who want to eat at a more leisurely pace can purchase grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos for $2 each or sodas and bottled water at the park’s concession stand. Glow necklaces and other children’s items will also be for sale for $1.

At dusk, Missouri River Valley skydivers will descend on Southview Park’s main ball field.

The headliner, a 20-minute fireworks show, is scheduled for approximately 9:30 p.m.

The chamber sponsors the event through donations and American Celebration sales, along with proceeds from the Mushroom Festival tennis ball drop. To donate to this community event, contact the Richmond Area Chamber office at 104 W. Main St. or 816-776-6916.
