Richmond golf coach Murray Dennis had mixed feelings on the outcome of Monday’s Class 2, District 8 tournament at Shirkey Golf Course. Although three of his golfers will move on to Monday’s sectional tournament at the Blue Springs Country Club, one individual missed by one shot and the Spartans fell four shots shy of advancing as a team.

“We’re a little disappointed that we didn’t make it as a team, but that’s the way the ball rolled yesterday,” he said. “We didn’t shoot as well as we could have, but districts are a little different than the regular season. I think the guys might have pressed a little too much, which probably aided in our scores not being as good as they could have been, but we’ll take it. At this stage in the game, it’s survive and advance.”

The Spartans shot a 359 to finish fourth in the 10-team field. Bishop LeBlond had the low total of 345, with Maryville shooting 355 to claim the other sectional qualifying spot. The top two teams and low 15 scores not on the qualifying teams advance.

Penney of Hamilton fell two shots shy of the final spot, followed by Richmond’s total.

Zach Frederick had the low Spartan round of the day as he tied Brookfield’s Jack Bredehoft for third with an 82. The Richmond junior shot a 43 on the front, but answered with a 39 on the back nine.
